Sweaters Had a Bad Rep in the Past, But Now We Need to Know How to Pull it Off

by Taila O’Neil

Sweaters may have gotten a bad wrap in the past, when the only one you added to your collection each year was the one your grandmother knitted you for Christmas. Well, don’t sweat it, with these 7 styling tips, you’ll look cuter in a sweater than Paris Hilton’s Chihuahuas (and they are sickeningly cute).

1. How to Wear a V-Neck Sweater

Oversized V-neck sweaters are a great option to be paired over dresses and maxi skirts. This is one of the more popular trends you’ll see this season. To give your sweater some definition, add a skinny belt around your waist. This look is great when the sweater sleeves are rolled up to the forearm or elbow. Cropped chunky sweaters are also great with dresses and maxis, depending on the look you are going for.

2. Wearing Cardigans

Thick cardigans aren’t just for Mr. Rogers. For a tougher edge, pair a thick cardy with a graphic or basic tee, skinny jeans, combat boots, and beanie. If you want to jazz it up, try adding a pair of hoops and stack of bangles. If you prefer the preppier look, match a tight lightweight cardigan with a plain white button-down shirt and classic accessories.

3. How to Wear an Off the Shoulder Sweater

Ask any guy, and he’ll tell you that the off the shoulder look is one of the sexiest styles ever invented. The hint of skin adds instant allure without being too revealing. Try styling this look with a pair of tribal or corduroy leggings and some riding boots. A long medallion necklace or a thick pair of hoops will give it more sophistication. If you’re more of a heel girl, add a pair of booties with socks that stop right above the shoe.

4. How to Wear Cable Knit Sweaters

Cable knit sweaters are great to layer over collared shirts. This type of sweater creates an interesting textured look when paired with a fitted, collared, or button-up blouse. For an artistic contrast, allow the first layer of this look to be longer than the sweater.

5. How to Wear a Boxy Sweater

Boxy silhouettes pair great with an ankle jean or ankle pant. Think Audrey Hepburn on a cold day—three quarter lengths to long sleeves. To complete the look, add a chunky statement necklace or pearls. This style is great for work and goes well with heels or flats. If the sweater is lightweight enough, layer a blazer over it to show them that you mean business.

6. How to Wear a Vintage Sweater

Vintage printed sweaters are a big trend in the streets right now. Designers have caught on and are also churning out printed, tribal, and patterned motifs for their oversized crew neck sweaters. This style is great with a pair of solid leggings or colored skinny jeans. For the feet, add a pair of flats, or boots and simple accessories.

7. Way to Wear a Sweater Dress

Finally, for my chicest sweater wearers, here comes the sweater dress. This is one of the prefect dresses to wear with tights and a great option for the office, a date, or drinks with the girls. The dress looks best with knee- or thigh-high boots. Make sure the dress is fitted, not frumpy. For a little extra swagger, add a leather vest on top and you’ll turn heads wherever you go.

Now that you know how to style your sweater, get in on the trend and snuggle up to one today!
